Aims and Scope
Stationed at the Victorian College of the Arts at the University of Melbourne, Art + Australia is a contemporary art journal and research platform. With a focus on art from Australia and Asia, we publish research, commentary, discussions, and host events and workshops. Each issue of our journal presents commissioned and submitted responses orientated around a theme.
Art + Australia is accompanied by the Art + Australia Study Centre (A+ASC) – a platform for interdisciplinary long-form research projects in the field of art. Alongside A+ASC, Art + Australia aims to provide a forum for innovative and critical discourse on art, its associated activities, implications and wider culture. Our target readership includes artists, art historians, curators, arts workers and art collectors.
Open Access Statement
From 2023 Art + Australia became an open access journal. Users and contributors can read, download, copy, distribute, print, search or link to articles from 2023 free of charge without asking prior permission from the publisher or author. Unless stated, third party images published on this site may require additional permissions from the copyright holders for republication.
If content from this site is redistributed, Art + Australia must be clearly and accurately accredited as the original publisher.
Editorial Guidelines

Instructions for Contributors
In the lead up to publication, Art + Australia distributes a Call for Papers (CFP) inviting emerging and established researchers and artists to submit proposals in response to the theme. CFPs are announced via our Instagram and mailing list. Each proposal is reviewed by Art + Australia’s Editors and the Editorial Board.
If a proposal is accepted, contributors will be sent timelines and a Contributor Agreement. All published works are screened for plagiarism by the Editors, referenced and assigned a unique URL. Published works are renumerated in negotiation with the contributor; Art + Australia does not accept any fees for publication.
Repository Policy
Contributors are permitted to deposit a copy of their work (in submitted, accepted and published form) in an institutional or other repository of their choice. When doing so, they must clearly attribute Art + Australia as the original place of publication with correct citation details and a URL.
Art + Australia operates under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence. With appropriate attribution, contributors and users are permitted to share articles for non-commercial purposes, so long as the material is not modified. Our Contributor Agreement stipulates that upon publishing, contributors transfer exclusive publishing rights to Art + Australia.
